Lyft has leased a roughly 23,000-square-foot property at 1020 N. Elston Ave. in the North Branch Industrial Corridor, Crain’s Chicago Business reported. The new facility, an expansion from the 5,500-square-foot office the San Francisco-based ride-sharing company opened in Old Irving Park two years ago, is expected to house a new operations and driver service center.
When Lyft opened the Old Irving Park office, it had 22 Chicago employees. It’s not clear how large its Chicago-area workforce is today, or whether the company will leave its existing offices.
Lyft is leasing the Elston building from Shapack Partners, which paid $6.9 million early last year for the 1.3-acre property, a former taxi garage, according to Cook County property records.
Earlier this year, Lyft reached a revenue-sharing agreement with Chicago on the city’s Divvy bikeshare program, in exchange for a $50-million contribution to expand Divvy to all 50 wards by 2021.
