For the first time since 2012, the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN is closing for Thanksgiving. The mall will open again just in time for shopping on ‘Black Friday’, the day after Thanksgiving, at 5 a.m.
The mall’s senior vice president of marketing, Jill Renslow, said, “We think Thanksgiving is a day for families and for people we care about.” Additionally, many retailers have found that keeping the lights on for the holiday has resulted in greater expenses than sales. Another reason that supports the holiday closure is that more shoppers went online than to stores last year.
In fact, data shows that the biggest shopping day of the year is actually the Saturday before Christmas.
