Mall Demolition Begins, Mixed Use to Take its Place

Demolition has kicked off on Madison Square Mall, a former one-million-square-foot “Super Mall” in Huntsville, AL. Once the rubble has cleared from the property, a $350 million mixed-use development dubbed MidCity Huntsville will start to go north. Demolition is expected to take four months, after which Phase I will begin immediately.

Developer RCP Cos. will begin with a Topgolf and a 38-acre park on Research Park Boulevard. Upon buildout, the 100-acre site at University Drive/US 72 and Research Park Boulevard will have additional commercial and office space, more retail, a boutique hotel and hundreds of multifamily units.

Madison Square opened in 1984, and, for years was the North Alabama shopping destination for retail, entertainment and food. Over time, however, anchor tenants departed and the mall struggled to be relevant.  RCP purchased long-time owner CBL & Associates’ part of the mall in 2015, and revealed plans for MidCity Huntsville.
