Meridian Design Build recently wrapped construction on an 84,000-square-foot USDA meat processing plant for Amylu Foods at 1400 W. 44th St., within Chicago’s Stockyards Industrial Park.

Founded in 1924 as Leon’s Sausage Company, Amylu relocated its operations to the new facility from a West Loop plant where it operated for more than 95 years, a move that allowed the company to significantly increase production capacity and broaden its product line.

The new sausage processing plant includes 56,000 square feet of production/cold storage space, a -10 °F freezer, and a 16,500-square-foot corporate office space featuring separate raw and cooked employee facilities, a test kitchen and laboratory functions.

Meridian’s work on the project included the design and installation of process systems and piping necessary to support production equipment, including steam, sanitation, compressed air, venting, and process gas. An expandable central ammonia refrigeration plant was installed to accommodate plant cooling and production loads.
