Newcastle Plans Two Near North Resi Towers

Newcastle Ltd. wants to build 470 residential units on two Near North Side sites, including a 39-story tower that would replace one of the last remaining Barnes & Noble bookstores in the city, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The locally-based developer plans to unveil details of the two projects in an April 10 community meeting, according to an email that Ald. Brian Hopkins sent to constituents last week.

For the larger of the two projects, Newcastle will seek zoning approval to build a 39-story, 368-unit tower at 1120 to 1130 N. State St., according to Hopkins. It would include 158 parking spaces above ground-floor retail.

About a block north, at 1200 to 1206 N. State, Newcastle intends to construct an 11-story, 102-unit building. That building would have 31 parking spaces above a retail space on the ground floor, which would include a high-end restaurant, the Tribune reported.
