Northeastern, Boston U. Eye Fall Semester for On-Site Classes

At least two of the Boston area’s major universities are looking to bring back on-site classes this fall. Northeastern University informed students on Friday that it would reopen its campuses for the fall, while Boston University (BU) is making similar plans.

In an open letter published on Northeastern’s website, President Joseph Aoun said reopening would be “a phased process,” and that logistics were even more complicated than the switch to virtual learning had been amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “It will require new and innovative thinking about classroom usage, residential occupancy, dining, athletics, student activities, and other elements of campus life,” he wrote.

Gradual reopening at the Boston campus could begin later this month, wrote Aoun. For Northeastern’s other facilities nationwide, “timelines will differ based on campus locations.”

Although BU hasn’t set a timeline for fall yet, the school disputed recent published reports saying that it wouldn’t reopen until January 2021.
