The Phoenix area, one of the “ground zeros” for the housing crisis, now can’t build enough houses to meet the growing demand. The reason is because of severe labor shortages, not just on the development level, but also among subcontractors. Low wages compared to neighboring states, and lack of skilled labor are contributing to the issue.
To fill the gap, some builders are partnering with organizations such as the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona to train refuges as electrical workers. Another program that is helpful is the Rio Salado College and Arizona Department of Corrections Incarcerated Re-Entry Program. One builder indicated that without the training programs, he would be running 30 days behind schedule.
