President Trump Says Apple’s Tim Cook Promises Three U.S. Factories

President Donald Trump said Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook promised to build three large manufacturing facilities in the U.S. The location, size or timing, not to mention an official confirmation from Apple, have not yet been determined or received.

If that promise comes to fruition, it would help President Trump fulfill an economic goal of boosting American manufacturing. The President told the Wall Street Journal that Cook called him and indicated the plants are going forward.

Trump has been critical of Apple for outsourcing production to factories in China. Apple is exploring ways to increase U.S. investment, especially in initiatives that promote advanced manufacturing. It backed a Corning glass plant in Kentucky with a $200-million investment.

Meanwhile, Foxconn Technology Group, which assembles iPhones and other devices for Apple, plans to build a big plant in the U.S., with Wisconsin emerging as a strong candidate.
