A report detailing tourism in San Antonio said that the economic impact of the hospitality industry was $15.3 billion in 2017, a $1.6-billion increase from two years previous. The report, issued by Trinity University professors Richard Butler and Mary Stefl, also noted that the local hospitality industry employs 140,188 people, or one in seven.
The biennial impact study began in 2002, and is commissioned by Visit San Antonio, the San Antonio Tourism Council, the San Antonio Hotel and Lodging Association, and the San Antonio Restaurant Association.
Casandra Matej with Visit San Antonio told the Rivard Report that 2018 is also shaping up to be a banner year, especially due to the NCAA Men’s Final Four. However, “We also knew that 2019 and 2020 may be a little bit of a challenge. So a lot of our sales and marketing efforts are trying to fill those holes.”
