South Coast Plaza, Orange County, CA’s pioneering shopping mall, turned 50 this week. The 2.8-million-square-foot, 96%-leased retail center is still owned by C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, a family that transformed farmland into an internationally recognized destination, attracting 22 million annual annually.
Half a century after the center opened at 3333 Bristol St., the Segerstrom family continues its only focus on the one asset, which aids in flexibility and positioning to match demand and customer preference. The South Coast Plaza’s central county location is at the center of affluent neighborhoods, cementing the spot as a popular gathering place.
The center’s success rests on the right mix of luxury merchants, on-site amenities, different types of food options and renovation and expansion projects, when necessary.
