San Antonio, Bexar County Step Off the Amazon Bandwagon

With all of the municipalities and counties clamoring about why they would be a great site for H2Q, Amazon’s second headquarters, San Antonio and Bexar County officials announced they are pulling out from the bid competition.

“Blindly giving away the farm isn’t our style,” wrote Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff in a letter sent to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg co-wrote the letter.

Many of the officials responsible for San Antonio’s economic development believe Amazon had already selected a site, even before the company made the announcement. Regardless, the city of San Antonio reviewed the bidding criteria, and decided it didn’t have a chance.

“As aspirational as we are about our community’s potential, we simply wouldn’t be highly competitive from a real estate and incentives perspective,” said the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation’s Erica Hurtak.
