San Marcos Upgraded Plan to Focus on Walking, Biking

The San Marcos City Council recently adopted its updated transportation master plan to focus on safety, reduced congestion and environmental issues. The update is the plan’s first since 2004. The plan’s goal is to provide guidelines for transportation infrastructure development as the city continues to grow.

Under the new plan, the city will focus on a transit network to link downtown and other key intensity zones. Specifically, the goal is to encourage a shift from automobile usage to walking and cycling. This would include street designs that take into account pedestrians and cyclists, as well as cars.

The plan also encourages rain gardens, biofiltration swales and other low-impact drainage facilities within medians and landscaped areas. Such designs would both collect and treat urban runoff.
