Steppenwolf Theatre Company, whose founders include actor Gary Sinise, is embarking on the third phase of an expansion project that began in 2016. The North Side-based ensemble broke ground Tuesday on a $54-million expansion that will include a 400-seat theatre in the round.
The 50,000-square-foot project at 1646 N. Halsted is being undertaken in collaboration with locally-based architectural firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill and UK-based theater design firm Charcoalblue. It’s expected to open in summer 2021.
Along with the theatre, the new facility will include a dedicated education floor, two-story atrium lobby, a wine bar and a sidewalk lounge.
“The expansion of Steppenwolf will introduce new relationships with its patrons, neighborhood and Chicago as a whole,” said lead architect Gordon Gill. “Architecturally, the design fits within the character of the neighborhood, recognizing the significance of its presence along Halsted Street while respecting our neighbors.”
