Sugar Land Readying for Annexation, Population Boost

Annexation plans to add 3,850 more acres to Sugar Land, TX were approved by the city council. Once New Territory and Greatwood are added to the city southwest of Houston, the population will increase by 34% from the current 87,367 to 117,000 residents. Annexation will take effect in December, 2017.

New Territory and Greatwood are municipal utility districts (MUD), and strategic partnership agreements have been signed between Sugar Land and the two areas. The contracts cover commitments for annexation and service provisions to non-Sugar Land residents.

Plans for annexation began in 2007, with money set aside at the time to pay for pre-annexation costs. With the acquired areas, the city can grow its tax base, while adding more funds to its coffers. Current residents of Sugar Land won’t see tax or cost increases.
