Suitors Line Up for Vacant Haggen Stores

There seems to be a big demand for vacant Haggen stores in San Diego County.

Albertsons, Gelson’s and Smart & Final are among the major suitors for the 25 stores that were recently closed.

Smart & Final is bidding on 11 of the stores in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Coronado, El Cajon, La Mesa, San Diego, Santee and San Ysidro. Albertsons is vying for five locations in El Cajon, La Mesa, Rancho Bernardo and San Diego, while Gelson’s is going after three stores in Carlsbad, Del Mar and La Jolla.

Haggen, based in Bellingham, Wash., entered the San Diego market at the beginning of the year and exited after only six months.

For a deal to take place with any of the stores, a bankruptcy court would first have to give its approval.
