Palo Alto, CA-based Tesla Motors Inc. is seeking to expand its factory in Fremont, CA by 4.6 million square feet. It would allow the electric car manufacturer to boost annual production to 500,000 cars, and is expected to increase its workforce by 3,000.
The company envisions expanding onto a 250-acre site next to its current 5.3-million-square-foot facility, which Tesla took over in 2010. The proposed plan includes building 11 new structures, the majority of which would be industrial space.
The site is within Fremont’s Warm Springs/South Fremont Community Plan area, where environmental reviews have been completed. The master plan for the area includes development of up to 4,000 housing units and 10 million square feet of commercial space on 879 acres surrounding a planned BART station.
