Texarkana to Youth Sports: Come to Our City

The city of Texarkana, TX’s proposed Fiscal Year 2020 budget includes $200,000 that would pay for sports facility improvements and ways to attract youth sports tournaments. Such tournaments can boost the local economy, as hundreds of young athletes, and their parents, visit Texarkana to compete, then stay overnight.

A city council vote adopting the budget will take place Sept. 9, 2019. If the budget is approved, the city will develop specific plans to spend the project’s funds, which would come from hotel occupancy tax revenues.

According to Texarkana’s Ross Cowling, each member of a youth baseball or softball team brings an average of three people with him or her when traveling to a tournament, not including coaches. “When we bring people into the community, they stay at a hotel, they eat here, and they hopefully buy here,” city manager Shirley Jaster told the Texarkana Gazette.
