Texas Biomedical Wants Expanded Lab for Lethal Diseases

The Texas Biomedical Research Institute, headquartered in San Antonio, has preliminary approval for a new and expanded “biosafety level 4 facility” – or BSL-4. The lab will be built with stringent safety precautions, so that the institute can study the most lethal infectious diseases in the world.

Though the institute at 7620 N.W. Loop 410 already has a level 4 lab, it’s been very busy. The lab has turned away nearly $40 million in research work because it is already working at maximum capacity. Texas Biomedical has the only privately-owned level 4 lab in the country.

The scope, cost and timing of the project have not yet been established, nor has the location for the new facility.
