The three U.S. Representatives to Congress from Texas’ Rio Grande Valley are coming out against President Donald Trump’s executive order to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico. The representatives are Henry Cuellar of Laredo, Filemon Vela of Brownsville and Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen.
Vela and Gonzalez, in a joint statement, indicated that a wall was a “simplistic solution” for “complex regional challenges that can only be addressed through collaboration with our partners in Latin America, not through grandstanding.” Cuellar added that there are more effective ways to secure the borders, including ground sensors, unmanned aerial systems and video surveillance systems, all of which are technologies being used by the Department of Homeland Security.
All three representatives indicated that the American taxpayers, not Mexico, would end up paying the cost. “You will be paying for it,” Vela said in the statement,” and it won’t solve anything.”
