The 78’s Biotech Anchor Underscores Chicago’s Life Sciences Appeal

News that the University of Illinois’ Discovery Partners Institute would anchor Phase 1 of Related Midwest’s The 78 mega-project goes beyond the development’s transformative potential for Chicago’s Near South Side. It also underscores the strength of the region’s life sciences sector.

“Chicago and its suburbs are home to some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including Abbott, Abbvie, Astellas and Horizon Therapeutics, in addition to global medical device and diagnostics companies such as Baxter and Medline,” said Chicago-based managing director Jonathan Metzl at Cushman & Wakefield.

Metzl cited the region’s two main attractions for life sciences. There’s the “multitude of life sciences-oriented research and educational institutions that provide a consistent pipeline of talent and innovation,” and the lower cost of doing business compared to “peers like Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.”
