Travis County commissioners voted Tuesday to give Tesla tax breaks worth a minimum of $14.7 million to build a new car plant, and eventually employ thousands, near the Austin airport, CNBC reported. The Del Valle Independent School District previously okayed incentives for the electric car maker.
The site where Tesla has proposed to build its next “Gigafactory” is known as the Austin Green development. Tesla still has to purchase the land, which would cost it an estimated $5 million. The cost of building the plant, which will manufacture Tesla’s Cybertruck, is projected at $1 billion or more.
County commissioners debated the incentives in executive session Tuesday. CNBC reported that public opinion was divided between residents who wanted to bring jobs and income to the area, and those who voiced concern over a lack of worker safety guarantees and minimum pay for entry-level or low- and middle-skilled jobs at the factory.
