Tribe Plans $500M Casino in Northern California

The Wilton Rancheria tribe signed an option to acquire 35.9 acres at The Outlet Collection, a partially-completed mall owned by the Dallas-based Howard Hughes Corp. in Elk Grove, CA. The tribe is seeking to develop a $400- to $500-million casino, hotel and convention center.

The decision to develop at the Elk Grove site came after the tribe explored options at a 282-acre farmland site in Gault, CA. Costly infrastructure needs pushed it to the Elk Grove location, which already has infrastructure, roads, power and sewer service to accommodate the major development.

The tribe hopes to start construction in January 2017. Once the tribe exercises its option on the land, the federal government will place it into trust, allowing it to be considered sovereign tribal land and make it eligible to host gaming.
