Uber’s self-driving truck company, Otto, is expanding into 130,000 square feet at San Francisco’s Pier 70. The 300,000 square feet of historic waterfront buildings, formerly the headquarters of Union Iron Works and Bethlehem Steel, is under redevelopment by Orton Development.
The Emeryville, CA-based developer is reportedly investing $120 million into the renovation, with tenants expected to occupy by the end of 2017. The surrounding Dogpatch neighborhood has evolved into a mixed-use community, with office, light-industrial, retail and residential.
Orton’s Pier 70 renovation is the initial phase of a larger 2.5-million-square-foot waterfront redevelopment plan. Forest City is working to secure entitlements for an additional phase of work.
The Otto lease is one of San Francisco’s largest of 2017, and brings the building to 85% leased. Other tenants at Pier 70 include Restoration Hardware, Tea Collection and Obscura Digital.
