The University of Texas System announced its intent to establish a medical school in Tyler, TX. The institution would be the first medical education facility in East Texas, with the goal of increasing access to healthcare in the region.
A proposal to establish the school will be on the UT System Board of Regents’ next meeting, on Feb. 26, 2020. The regents’ authorization will launch notifications and other activities to proceed with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and other licensing agencies. Under the plan, future physicians could complete their entire education and training in Tyler.
If approved, the medical school would be the seventh in the UT System. According to UT board of regents Kevin Eltife, a medical school would have a positive impact on health systems in the region, including UT Health East Texas, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances and Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint.
