Plastic is harmful to the environment, but useful to keep food products fresh. What if this problem could be put to rest with edible food wrappers?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is currently developing and testing a milk protein casing that could take the place of many plastic-wrapped food, for example, the wrappers found on string cheese. Not only is the packaging biodegradable and edible, but it is also nutritionally beneficial as it’s made from casein, a protein that is actually 500 times more effective at keeping oxygen out.
As of now, the film is tasteless, but researchers say that both flavor and vitamins could be added. The timeline to roll-out this food packaging revolution could be as early as three years.
