The 50-year-old student-housing complex in Austin’s West Campus neighborhood is headed for the wrecking ball. Landmark Properties, which acquired University Towers at 801 W. 24th St. in 2018, is planning to demolish the buildings. The Athens, GA company is planning to build the 975-bed Mark at Austin on the site; the new development will include a parking garage and 2,900 square feet of ground-floor retail space.
According to Landmark, University Towers couldn’t be renovated, as modifying the walls would compromise the buildings’ structural integrity. The buildings are closed for the fall semester. Landmark indicated that construction isn’t scheduled to begin until the first half of 2020. Humphreys & Partners Architect LP designed Mark at Austin.
Meanwhile, Landmark is developing the Standard at Austin, on the site of the University Towers’ old garage.
