The last time we wrote about grocer Haggen, it was expanding in the area. Now it seems there are layoffs taking place.
What’s weird, though, is that it opened 25 stores in San Diego County just earlier this year. We questioned whether or not there was room for another grocer at the time. Haggen, which is based in Bellingham, Wash., opened the new stores after buying units as a result of the Albertsons merger with Safeway.
The positive thing for retail real estate landlords, though, is that there are several supermarket concepts expanding right now if their stores have to close.
