Although Walmart has yet to open a store under its own name in New York City, it’s about to establish a bigger presence here via a fulfillment center in The Bronx. The facility will open this fall for jet.com, the e-commerce company Walmart bought two years ago.
The facility will bring same-day and next-day delivery of jet.com merchandise to the city. New York will therefore be among Walmart’s first markets to offer same-day delivery.
Jet will use delivery service Parcel, which it acquired last fall. The Bronx facility initially will stock only Jet merchandise ranging from groceries to smartphones; however, a company spokeswoman didn’t rule out the possibility of Walmart merchandise being stocked there as well.
Walmart has been investing heavily in e-commerce, and is aiming for a 40% increase in online sales this fiscal year.
