The Houston City Council has approved the sale of the historic waterworks along Nicholson and West 20th Streets in the Heights neighborhood to Phoenix-based apartment developer Alliance Realty Partners. The Phoenix buyer will pay $15.2 million to redevelop the former water-pumping structure into two mid-rise apartment buildings, with retail space and garages.
The waterworks includes a 1928 concrete and brick reservoir building, recorded in the National Register of Historic Places, and recorded as one of Houston’s early water pumping structures. Also on the site is an Art Deco pumping station built in 1939, and a pump building that came online in 1949.
Alliance submitted the highest cash offer out of 19 proposals the city received for the four-acre property.
