Wight & Company has begun construction on the new Student Wellness Center at the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus. Scheduled for completion in fall 2020, the new center will create a single, integrated facility for the university’s student health, counseling and wellness resources.
“We’re updating a historic building to enable the University of Chicago to meet the comprehensive health and wellness needs of students, and we are doing so in a way that is deeply respectful of the original architecture and seamless in its integration of past and present,” said Wight EVP Kevin Havens.
The 30,000-square-foot project includes the ground floor renovation of part of the historic building that houses the school’s student health clinic, known as the Lying-In Hospital. It also entails a new modern glass addition infilling an existing courtyard. The new center will also provide a dedicated student entrance for easier access.
