Boston-based affordable housing firm WinnCompanies has extended its self-imposed moratorium on evictions for nonpayment of rent for tenants until the end of 2020. The moratorium applies to Winn-owned properties in Massachusetts, which number around 6,500 units.
WinnCompanies will not release tenants from their obligation to pay rent. Instead, tenants will be required to demonstrate financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and enter into a payment plan agreement. As of now, the moratorium only applies to residents of properties the company owns in Massachusetts.
In the state of Massachusetts, there is currently an eviction moratorium for nonpayment of rent until Aug. 18. Evictions for other reasons such as criminal activity in an apartment unit are allowed to proceed under the current moratorium.
