San Jose, CA-based Zoom Video Communications Inc. plans to open a new research and development center in Phoenix. The videoconferencing software company also is looking at adding a center in Pittsburgh, and envisions hiring about 500 people between the two centers.

Zoom’s Eric Yuan says, “Both Phoenix and Pittsburgh have incredibly well-educated, skilled and diverse talent pools that are well-positioned to help support Zoom’s ongoing growth and continued success.”

A site is being sought near Arizona State University in the Valley, so Zoom can tap into ASU’s roughly 4,500 engineering graduates per year. The new Phoenix-area software engineers will start to be hired immediately and will work remotely until COVID-19 stay-home orders are lifted, and the facility is delivered.

ASU President Michael M. Crow says, “Zoom’s expansion into the Phoenix market reflects the success of our efforts to grow and support a new economy for Arizona that is based on technology and innovation.”
